Job Summary

The Director of Cultivation is responsible for implementing the cultivation management plan oversee. This position will report directly to, and work closely with, the Director of Operations to ensure each facility is making continuous improvements in cultivation techniques and facility management that lead to improved yields and improved overall quality of harvested flower, along with streamlining processes and improving overall cultivation efficiencies. This position will focus on the implementation of the overall strategy, goals, and direction of Cultivation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Manages multiple large-scale (40,000 sq.ft. plant canopy) indoor or greenhouse facilities, in different geographic locations.

Weekly documented 121 meetings with the Cultivation Managers & Assistant Cultivation Managers at each site.

Conduct documented monthly cultivation staff meetings at each site.

Oversees and directs all the tasks in the grow cycle, including transplanting, feeding, cloning, cropping, inventory management, and seed-to-sale tracking.

Helps to hire, train, and lead Cultivation Managers and other Cultivation staff as needed.

Works directly with the Sr. Director of Cultivation, Director of Operations, National Crop Planner, Production Planner, and Sales to ensure the quantity, mix, and yield of strains planted and produced will support sales goals and market needs.

Under the direction of the Director of Operations, develop and implement short-term and long-term cultivation goals for each of the cultivation facilities.

Works with Cultivation Managers to develop cultivation and greenhouse utilization plans to maximize growing efficiency.

Ensures SOPs are established, approved, and followed in daily processes and that all cultivation-related standard operating procedures are followed, including inventory management, security, and cleanliness SOPs.

Assists Director of Operations in updating and publishing all SOPs related to Cultivation.

Measures and reports performance metrics and criteria with respect to cloning, potting, and other activities.

Identifies and recommends to Cultivation Managers opportunities to reduce labor costs by increasing workplace efficiencies.

Identifies and secures new tools, equipment and items needed to implement new techniques and processes.

Drives improvement in Cultivation by promoting new cultivation techniques and methodologies (i.e., crop steering).

Oversees and advises Cultivation Managers for completing quarterly budget analysis and labor costs statistics.

Ensures each production/manufacturing facility is compliant with all applicable local, state, and federal workplace regulations.

Provides insight and communicates on Facility & Maintenance related matters to ensure the greenhouse is operating for uninterrupted production and efficiency improvements. Identifies, leads, and develops talent to maximize individual, team, and organizational effectiveness to meet company goals.

Participates in Ayr Wellness innovation programs and in new product development and implementation.

Projects a positive image of the organization to employees, customers, industry, and community.

Qualifications

Must meet age requirement as outlined by state cannabis agencies.

Able to pass all background checks/fingerprinting as required by state cannabis agencies.

Able to provide valid badging/credentials as required by state cannabis agencies.

Strong understanding of advanced fertigation systems.

Extensive knowledge regarding both the environmental and health/safety standards for agricultural operations.

Significant technical understanding of plant production as impacted by environmental conditions and crop fertility, as well as the interplay between crop fertility, environmental conditions, and light level as pertains to plant growth.

Strong indoor horticulture and greenhouse management experience.

Sound understanding of the financial principles applicable to effective planning, budgeting, and control of costs in crop production.

Thorough understanding of state and local medical and/or recreational cannabis laws and how they apply to the operations of Ayr Wellness.

Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.

Effective time-management skills and ability to multitask.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in a horticultural or agricultural field preferred. Degrees in other disciplines are acceptable in conjunction with suitable experience and accomplishments.

Experience

We're looking for a strong professional leader with a background in horticulture or agriculture.

A minimum of 5 years experience in the cannabis industry as a Cultivation Manager.

A minimum of 5 years experience leading and supervising a team.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced, changing and challenging environment.

Experience with inventory control software.

Proficiency in Windows-based software, point-of-sale applications, and internet navigation.

This job will require continuous education and training.

This position will require reading and learning through textbooks, articles, webinars, and hands-on activities.

Direct reports

Manages department within a function with authority to hire/terminate.

Working conditions

The person in this position may be exposed to dust, kief, cleaning chemicals and fumes. Although systems are in place to remove these byproducts, there is still exposure to some degree.

Frequently works in rooms with bright light where eye protection is required.

Frequently works in rooms with moderate heat and humidity.

The person in this position is constantly exposed to moderate background noise due to environmental systems, equipment and fans.

Must be able to work long hours and/or weekends if necessary.

This position frequently travels to multi-state cultivation facilities.

Physical requirements

Sitting, standing and walking motion/movement will be required throughout the shift.

Constant movement of hands/fingers and limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, coordination and stamina.

Constantly positions self throughout task at hand.

Frequently ascends/descends a ladder to inspect/maintain plants.

Occasionally operates power hand tools and other cultivation machinery.

Must be able to inspect and detect quality deviations and defects.

Occasional lifting, positioning or moving items up to 100 pounds.
