How to Dress for a Cannabis Industry Job Interview

December 15, 2021

First things first, if you’re reading this, congratulations on securing your interview. Now it’s time to learn how to dress for the big moment. Certain cannabis-related jobs like cultivation and lab work require specific attire, but aside from that, it depends on the company and its culture. You want to look professional without your outfit distracting from what you actually have to say.

Researching the proper attire and prepping your outfit beforehand gives you the confidence you need to ace the interview. Continue reading for some advice on how to do just that.

Dressing for a Job Interview: General Tips

You should approach dressing for a cannabis-related job interview the same way you would a position in any other field. The better you look, the more confident you’ll feel walking into the room (or turning on that Zoom camera). Read on below for a few things to remember when prepping for your next interview.

Understand the Importance of Dressing Well for an Interview

Even in the cannabis industry, interviews are formal meetings where you need to make a great first impression. Whether in-person or on Zoom, how you’re dressed is often the first thing an interviewer will notice about you. At the very least, you need to make sure that your outfit isn’t out of place and doesn’t distract from what you’re saying.

As a general rule of thumb, we suggest dressing up rather than down. That’s because if you look good, you feel good. Walking into an interview knowing you’re prepared and dressed for the part will give you the confidence you need to ace the interview.

Research the Appropriate Workplace Attire

There are all kinds of different cannabis related career opportunities ranging from plant-touching to ancillary services. How you dress for an interview should depend on the type of work and overall culture at the company you’re applying to. For example, a cannabis grower’s attire is vastly different from that of a cannabis lawyer. Simply use your best judgment to decide on an outfit based on the company and type of job you’re applying for.

Know the Difference Between Business Casual & Professional

Sometimes recruiters and hiring managers will give interviewers a rule of thumb for how to dress in the interview. Two important distinctions you should know are business casual and professional attire. Business casual means no shorts, jeans, ripped pants, skirts that are too short and more. For the most part, you have to wear any kind of suit or tie to conform to business casual attire.

On the other hand, professional dress attire in cannabis is usually reserved for job types like legal and finance. Professional dress generally means a suit and tie with slacks and a dress shirt or dress skirt. Additionally, you’ll want to make sure your outfit is clean, fits well, and is wrinkle-free.

How to Dress for a Budtender Interview

How you dress for a budtender interview can make or break how a hiring manager perceives you. That’s because as a budtender you are consumer-facing and need to present yourself as such. Some dispensaries are more formal than others and impose dress guidelines, while others don’t care as much. This is another instance where you’ll need to do a little bit of research to see how the dispensary you’re applying to operates.

It’s always better to dress up rather than down and it’s no different when interviewing for a budtender position. At the very least, no shorts, jeans, or graphic tees. Your outfit should make you feel confident, comfortable, and sharp so dress accordingly.
